Towel GSM calculator.
Convert towel weight between GSM and pounds per dozen for any size, in centimetres or inches. Built for buyers comparing hotel towel quotations from different markets.
Approximate: GSM = towel weight ÷ towel area. Borders, hems and finishing tolerances mean real towels vary, which is why tolerances are written into every specification.

How the conversion works.
GSM (grams per square metre) describes the fabric. Pounds per dozen describes twelve finished towels of a particular size. To convert, you need the size:
- Towel area in m² = width (m) × length (m).
- Weight per towel (g) = GSM × area.
- Pounds per dozen = weight per towel × 12 ÷ 453.6.
Example: a 70 × 140 cm bath towel at 550 GSM has an area of 0.98 m², weighs about 539 g, and comes to about 14.3 lb per dozen.
Which GSM to choose.
- 300–400 GSM: lighter and quick-drying, for gym, pool, spa and kitchen use.
- 400–500 GSM: common for hand towels and mid-range bath towels.
- 500–600 GSM: a frequent choice for hotel bath towels.
- 600–750+ GSM: heavier and plusher, for premium rooms, suites and bath sheets.
GSM is only part of a towel specification. Yarn, loop construction, finishing and tolerance matter as much; see how to import hotel towels from Pakistan.
Questions buyers ask
What does GSM mean for towels?
GSM is grams per square metre: the weight of the towel fabric. A higher GSM usually means a heavier, denser towel. It is only one part of a specification; yarn, loop construction and finishing matter as much.
How do I convert GSM to pounds per dozen?
Multiply the GSM by the towel area in square metres to get grams per towel, multiply by 12 for a dozen, then divide by 453.6 to convert grams to pounds. The calculator above does this for any size.
What GSM is a hotel bath towel?
Hotel bath towels are commonly specified around 500–600 GSM. Lighter weights dry faster and launder more economically; heavier weights feel plusher. The right weight depends on the property and how the towels are laundered.
Why does a real towel weigh slightly differently?
Borders, hems, moisture and manufacturing tolerances all affect weight. That is why a target GSM is always agreed with a tolerance, for example ±5%, and checked on the sample.
