Why buyers look to Pakistan for towels
Pakistan grows cotton and has a complete textile chain: spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing. Terry towel production is concentrated around Karachi and Faisalabad, and many mills are vertically integrated, which helps keep weight, colour and finish consistent from order to order.
What first-time buyers usually lack is not suppliers, but a reliable way to specify, compare and check them from abroad. The steps below are the ones that prevent most problems.
1. Write the specification first
A towel quotation is only comparable if it is priced against the same written specification. Before you ask for prices, define:
- Items and sizes: for example bath 70 × 140 cm, hand 40 × 70 cm, washcloth 30 × 30 cm, with a size tolerance.
- Weight: a target GSM and a tolerance (for example 550 GSM ±5%). US buyers often specify pounds per dozen instead; convert between the two.
- Yarn and construction: 100% cotton; ring-spun, combed or zero-twist; single or double ply; loop pile.
- Border: dobby, plain or jacquard, and any woven logo.
- Colour: white, or a Pantone or physical sample reference.
- Performance: absorbency, shrinkage after washing and colour fastness, with the test method.
- Labels and packing: care and brand labels, banding, polybags, carton size and carton marks.
If you are unsure of a value, say so. A good supplier will advise rather than guess.
2. Compare suppliers like with like
Ask every supplier to quote against the same sheet, the same quantity and the same Incoterm (for example FOB Karachi). Ask them to confirm each value in writing, and to state anything they cannot meet. A quote that is cheaper because it is lighter, smaller or uses a different yarn is not cheaper.
3. Approve a sample before production
Before bulk production, check a pre-production sample against the specification: weight per piece, finished size, feel, absorbency and appearance after a test wash. Once approved, keep a sealed reference sample on both sides. It becomes the standard the bulk order is checked against.
4. Agree quality checks before production starts
Write the acceptance criteria and inspection scope into the order: what is checked, how many pieces are sampled, and what happens if the lot fails. Final random inspections commonly use AQL sampling based on ISO 2859-1. You can appoint an independent inspection company; the supplier should give it access to the goods.
5. Shipping, documents and duty
Most towel orders ship by sea from Karachi Port or Port Qasim, as a full container (FCL) or shared container (LCL). Agree the Incoterm, for example FOB or CIF, so you know who arranges freight and insurance; see FOB vs CIF explained.
Typical export documents are a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. Cotton terry towels usually fall under HS heading 6302.60; confirm the exact code with your customs broker. Pakistan is a beneficiary of the EU’s GSP+ scheme and the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which can reduce import duty when the goods meet the rules of origin. Your broker can confirm eligibility for your shipment.
6. Make repeat orders repeatable
Give the specification a reference and version number, and re-confirm it for every repeat order. Most quality complaints on repeat orders come from an undocumented change: a slightly lighter weight, a different yarn, a new dye lot.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing quotes on GSM alone, without yarn, size and tolerance.
- Mixing pounds per dozen and GSM without converting.
- Skipping the test wash on the sample.
- Leaving packing and carton marks vague until the goods are ready.
- Accepting a certificate that covers the factory, not the product you are buying.
Questions buyers ask
What is the minimum order for hotel towels from Pakistan?
It depends on the specification, especially colour and custom borders, and on the manufacturer. White towels in standard sizes usually allow lower quantities than custom colours. We confirm the minimum for your exact specification in the quotation.
How long does a towel order take?
Timing depends on the specification, sampling, the manufacturer’s schedule and shipping route. We confirm sample and production timing in writing for your order rather than quoting a general figure.
Can towels be made under my own brand?
Private label is common: woven or printed labels, embroidered logos, logos woven into the border and branded packaging. Each is written into the specification and approved before production.
